“I was driving on the freeway through East L.A. when I noticed that I had been headed in the wrong direction. I was running late and decided to cross 3 lanes towards the next exit. I realized too late that I had cut off the wrong car. The driver drove up beside me and pulled a semi-automatic handgun from his lap, pointing it in my direction through the open window.

“Without thinking I slammed on the brakes, letting him pass me at high speed as I rushed toward the exit. Would he have pulled the trigger? I’ll never know. The encounter lasted only half a minute.

“I rushed back to my studio and started to draw EL EASTSIDE. The scene depicts the aftermath of a drive-by shooting. I don’t know if the victim was the intended target or an innocent bystander. The scene did not depict what had just happened to me on the freeway that day but is an interpretation of the kinds of things that happen daily on any side of the freeway.”
