“Embarking on my own private pilgrimage, I seek a secret sign language
from all areas of Los Angeles; those hidden messages that live in the shadows of burnt-out neon, cast in a forgotten & archaic script as well as the web of powerlines & wires humming & hovering just above our heads. With the history of this city, literally written on the walls and facades of its streets, I try to observe, decode and document the quickly changing face of my muse. Sometimes we forget the beauty of this metropolis is all around us. Billboards and marquees silently scream our needs, wants, desires; our fearful idols and our idle fears lay plastered along this urban landscape. There we find our virtues, as well as, more & more... our vices.”
A native Angeleno, Mr. Lefner’s work reflects nostalgia for the city’s aging unique signage, storefronts and architecture from the entire city, including his current downtown home. He took his degree in Art from Cal State Northridge and has been documenting the history of LA through its urban landscape ever since. He employs his chosen medium, linocuts, as a means of preserving Los Angeles’ beauty and history, capturing it in detailed, very limited edition reduction linoleum block prints. Mr. Lefner’s works are held in an extensive array of private collections.
