Since 1985, I have had a recurring fascination with wrestlers and sumos. To me, the notion of men in secret regalia doing hand to hand combat in a ritualized arena represents a metaphor for ritualized human warfare. I am on occasion visiting this enigmatic spectacle. When I was invited to join this project, I was happy to strike this image once again as one of the lotteria cards. I picked the #20 in Roman numerals as an aesthetic choice. I find the XX an intriguing design element and a reminder of my punk days, X the band, and dos XX the beer and this is part of my own weird logic to graphic composition

Richard S. Duardo has been an advocate of the arts in L.A. for more than 25 years.  A graduate of UCLA (Graphic Design), he is a prolific artist in his preferred medium, serigraph.  He was named Artist of The Year by the California Arts Commission (1988) and, in 2004, was elected as Chair of The Graphic Arts Council at LACMA.  He created a commissioned series of portraits of the famed Japanese filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa.   Most recently, his renowned studio, Modern Multiples, completed a portfolio, The Chicano Collection, a series of 26 limited-edition reproductions from Cheech Marin’s private collection which depict urban life and the Chicano experience and are archived in major universities throughout the U.S.
