In celebration of its 40th Anniversary and in honor of its unique relationship with Los Angeles, Aardvark Letterpress owners and operators Cary and Brooks Ocon, along with designer Rick von Dehl and co-curator Lisa Jane Persky invited a wide variety of artists with strong ties to Los Angeles to create the first group (18 in a series of 54) of original, limited edition letterpress prints based on a game of chance: Loteria.  Traditionally, Loteria is played with cards that represent significant Icons in Mexican culture, For Aardvark, artists were asked to select and interpret some part of the Los Angeles experience in their own style and process for an L.A.-centric Loteria card. The numbers and titles were selected by the artists, while the layout follows the format of the original Loteria decks. In collaboration with these artists, Aardvark has produced Los Angeles Loteria Series I; 18 original cards, 13”X 19 3/4”; each in an edition of 100, 30 of which are complete editions in a boxed suite.

The singular visions depicted on the Aardvark Loteria cards reflect the diversity of Los Angeles and Angelenos. From drive-in-movie dreams to drive-by wake-up calls, they represent the spectacularly unique highs and lows of living in and loving Los Angeles.

The signed and numbered pieces can be purchased individually and as a boxed suite on these pages or directly through Aardvark Letterpress beginning June 5, 2008.
